Best neighborhoods
in Fukuoka

Where to stay in Fukuoka for a month or more. An honest look at nine neighborhoods, from busy Tenjin to the beach at Momochi, and why we picked quiet, old-town Gofukumachi.

How to choose 選び方

Fukuoka is compact, and almost every neighborhood on this list is within 15 minutes of the others by subway. So the question isn't really "where is convenient," it's what you want outside your front door: shopping and nightlife, parks and cafés, the beach, or quiet streets and temples.

For a stay of a month or more, think about your daily routine: where you'll buy groceries, work, get coffee and go for a walk. That matters more than being next to the sights.

Central and lively 都心

Tenjin天神 · The city center

Fukuoka's downtown: department stores, an underground shopping street, endless restaurants and the busiest subway hub in the city. Everything is at your doorstep.

  • Good forShopping, dining, transport, English-friendly services.
  • Keep in mindBusy and noisy, with higher rents. It can feel more like a place to visit than a place to live.

Best for: First-timers who want everything within reach.

Daimyo大名 · Boutiques and bars

Right next to Tenjin, Daimyo is a grid of narrow streets packed with independent fashion shops, cafés, bars and some of the city's best restaurants. Stylish and young.

  • Good forNightlife, cafés, shopping, people-watching.
  • Keep in mindLively late into the night, and apartments can be small.

Best for: Social types who want to be in the middle of the action.

Hakata Station博多駅 · The transport hub

The shinkansen, subway, buses and airport line all meet here, with big shopping centers like AMU Plaza and Canal City nearby. Very practical.

  • Good forDay trips, business travel, the airport, shopping.
  • Keep in mindMore business district than neighborhood, and it can feel impersonal after hours.

Best for: People traveling around Japan a lot.

Nakasu中洲 · The nightlife island

An island between two rivers, famous for its yatai food stalls along the water and the biggest nightlife district in Kyushu.

  • Good forYatai, bars, river walks, being close to both Tenjin and Hakata.
  • Keep in mindParts of it are very much an adult entertainment district, and it's loud at night.

Best for: Night owls. Many people prefer to live nearby and visit.

Green and relaxed 緑

Yakuin and Hirao薬院・平尾 · Cafés and tree-lined streets

A short ride south of Tenjin, with leafy streets, independent cafés, bakeries and small restaurants. It feels like a village inside the city, and it's popular with expats.

  • Good forCafé life, a residential feel, an easy commute to Tenjin.
  • Keep in mindFewer big sights, and English is less common than downtown.

Best for: Remote workers who want calm without being far out.

Ohori Park and Ropponmatsu大濠公園・六本松 · Lakes and libraries

Built around Ohori Park's big lake, with a running loop, the castle ruins and quiet residential streets. Neighboring Ropponmatsu has a bookish, laid-back feel.

  • Good forRunning, walking, parks, a slower pace.
  • Keep in mindOne of the more expensive areas, and quieter at night.

Best for: Runners, families and anyone who wants green space daily.

Momochi百道 · Beach and skyline

The seaside district with Momochi Beach, Fukuoka Tower and the baseball dome. Modern, open and breezy.

  • Good forBeach days, sunsets, an outdoor lifestyle.
  • Keep in mindFurther from the center, with fewer everyday shops right outside the door.

Best for: Beach lovers who don't need downtown every day.

Nishijin西新 · Local and affordable

A traditional shopping-street neighborhood west of the center, with a long shopping street and some of the lowest rents in the city.

  • Good forBudget, local life, the Nishijin shopping street.
  • Keep in mindLess English and further from the action.

Best for: Budget-minded stays and people who want local life.

Why we chose Gofukumachi 呉服町

Gofukumachi is in old Hakata, the historic merchant town between Hakata Station and Nakasu. It's where the city's oldest temples are, including Shofuku-ji, said to be Japan's first Zen temple, and it's a short walk to Kushida Shrine and the riverside.

It's quiet and residential, but everything you need is within 10 minutes on foot: Gofukumachi Station is 6 minutes away, there's a 7-Eleven and Lawson 3 minutes away, a FamilyMart and supermarkets, great ramen and coffee, and Nakasu's yatai stalls are close enough for dinner. Hakata Station and the airport are a few stops away.
